Cattle numbers decline at Barnawartha Sale

Yarding - 1200

Numbers declined in a mixed quality yarding. Vealers were in reasonable supply, however, some pens were showing the effects of the seasonal conditions. Yearling steers and heifers were mixed in quality and competition for plainer types was inconsistent. Not all of the usual domestic and export buyers were present.

The mixed quality supply of vealers sold to most of the usual buying group, however competition at times fluctuated. Vealers steers were mostly unchanged, while the heifer portion declined 10c to average 276c/kg. Medium weight trade heifers sold 8c cheaper despite some solid competition from lot feeders. Well finished heifers sold from 230c to 269c/kg. Trade steers were limited and buyers lacked interest. The better finished steers sold from 256c to 264c/kg.

Demand for heavy cattle was weaker, with not all processors operating or wanting to push prices. The better quality pens of prime C3 steers and bullocks made from 250c to 268c/kg.
