Lamb numbers at Ballarat this week eased to 36,291 head for the last sale of 2017. Recent strong returns continued with the usual buying group operating keenly on the average to good quality yarding. Heavy lambs sold to $5 dearer, trade weight lambs sold to $6/head dearer with the better quality making to 750c/kg cwt at times. Lighter lambs sold from $10 to $15/head dearer as processors feeders and restockers competed for their supplies. The best heavy lambs made to $218 and there were 12 sales over $200 as the heavier trade weights sold from $152 to $182/head and averaged 700c/kg cwt. Heavy shorn lambs sold to
$216/head. Restockers and feeders were active and paid $94 to $150 for unshorn lambs, at times feeders paid to $175/head. Lighter lots sold from $56 to $96 and shorn young lambs returned to the paddock from $105 to $142/head. Most lambs to restockers sold from $5 to $10/head up on last week.

Light weight 2 score young lambs sold from $93 to $124.50/head. Light trade 2 and 3 score lambs made from $118 to $148/head and averaged 700c/kg cwt. Trade weight 3 and 4 score lambs sold from $144 to $171.50 with the heavier drafts selling from $152 to $182/head, or from 650c to 720c to average 700c/kg cwt.

Heavy 3 and 4 score lambs sold from $177 to $218/head and averaged 690c/kg cwt. Extra heavy shorn young lambs made to $216/head. Heavy crossbred hoggets sold to $160, and Merino hoggets sold to $115/head.

The reduced sheep offering of 8,207 head covered all weights and grades, with good runs of both crossbred and Merino sheep on offer. Merino wethers were few in number, but did sell to $144/head. Most of the regular buying group operated on the sheep run, with the crossbred sheep selling either side of firm, and the Merino run generally easing a few dollars on last week’s high returns. A run of medium weight Merino sheep averaged 480c/kg cwt. Light weight 1 and 2 score sheep sold from $67 to $108.50/head. Medium weight 2 and 3 score sheep sold from $82 to $136/head, and made from 385c to 530c with the Merino mutton averaging 480c/kg cwt. Heavy Merino wethers sold to $144 and the medium weights sold from $90 to $120/head, the wethers averaged 495c to 500c/kg cwt to be a few dollars easier. Heavy 3 to 5 score crossbred sheep made from $102 to $170/head and averaged 415c/kg cwt. Rams made to $95 and the heavy crossbred wethers sold to $173/head.
