Agriculture has an important role to play

By Adrian Goonan - Agribusiness Executive - Warakirri

COVID-19 has the global economy hurtling towards a ‘war’ like recession with the depth and breadth unknown – Agriculture has an important role to play now and during the recovery – as a supplier of food and fibre to domestic and international consumers, and as it has in previous periods of economic stress and post-war depressions, as an attractive alternative investment.

Australian Agriculture this is our time – we have an opportunity to carefully and diligently work through the uncertainty of COVID-19 and deliver as a stable, defensive, uncorrelated and competitive investment.

A few things are critical to our ability to deliver, we need;

  • the farming community to take the COVID-19 threat seriously and strictly adhere to government instructions – this is not a city phenomenon
  • farmers and service providers to implement strict prevention measures – many of our farms are well placed to isolate, limit social interaction and reduce the potential risk of infection
  • agriculture, farming, agribusiness and associated services continue to be classified as an essential service
  • ability to move of farm inputs, supplies and machinery between states
  • ability to move limited number of employees and advisers between states
  • movement of produce, including livestock, between states and to domestic markets
  • export and domestic markets and associated supply chains, logistics and infrastructure to remain open

Like many businesses, Warakirri has been monitoring the situation closely and have developed farm specific COVID-19 guidelines and notes – they are not perfect but happy to share and exchange ideas if you would like to send me a message.
