You never know…. - ATVs cop a fair wack when it comes to safety on the Farm. We had one for years, and when you look back, they are pretty dangerous. But what doesn't get mentioned much when it comes to Farm safety is Cattle. We wrote a bit about Farm accidents and near misses in our Farmers Club newsletter just recently, and this is one of the replies that came out of it:

"Hi Dwain, My recent Farm injury happened the day after Boxing Day. I went out to the Paddock to get in a Heifer that was having calving troubles. She was lying down and had that look in her eyes, so I got off the Motorbike to be a bit more manoeuvrable if she got cranky. Within seconds, she jumped to her feet and charged straight at me. I didn't have time to get out of the way. I have no memory of what happened next, and I woke up on the ground with the Heifer running away from me. I started to get up but couldn't because of big pain in my hip, so I sort of hopped back to the Motorbike on one leg and rode home (no mobile coverage where I was).

I ended up with a fractured hip socket in my pelvis and a couple of bumps and bruises. No surgery or cast needed, but I was on crutches for about 10 weeks as it healed. I've really only got back into full-time Farm work in the last couple of weeks. (The Heifer was dispatched to the place where Cattle are eternally blessed within the hour)".

I have heard of quite a few Cattle-related injuries and even a couple of deaths. I am sure those who work Cattle every day are proficient at it, but when you have such large animals that can be unpredictable at times, then we always need to have our wits about us.
