What. Did I read $12:50/kg at Ballarat?

Yarding: 29,714

Lamb numbers decreased this week to 21,000, following last week's extremely strong market. There was less weight yarded, and the quality also declined, with the leading run presenting excellent supplementary feed but lacking weight and shape in some lambs. Most of the usual buyers participated in a market that fluctuated around firm prices throughout the yarding.

Light store and trade lambs sold for $5 to $8 less, while lambs intended for feeding, weighing over 18 kg cwt, sold firmly at $6 per head stronger. Medium and heavy trade lambs attracted the most interest, with some sales reaching up to $20 per head higher, averaging $4 to $8 stronger and occasionally exceeding 1250 cents per kg cwt. However, there were also cheaper sales for lambs that lacked finish. Extra heavy export lambs sold for a top price of $370 per head, but there was less weight available this week, resulting in prices $15 to $30 per head lower. Lambs returning to the paddock sold for $19 to $187, while those going to feed fetched between $170 and $209 per head. Light trade lambs (under 18 kg) suitable for market orders sold from $100 to $200 per head.

Heavy export lambs (26 to 30 kg) made between $263 and $332, while those over 30 kg sold for $322 to $370 per head, averaging 1000 to 1050 cents per kg cwt. In the Merino category, lambs sold from $81 to $270 per head.

Mutton numbers also dropped to 8,350 penned. The quality was mixed, with a significant portion of the ewes presented in lamb. Not all buyers were active in another erratic market. Merino wethers sold for $60 to $172 for lighter weights, while heavier Merino wethers fetched between $172 and $194, gaining $10, with some heavy score 4 wethers selling for $250 to $270 per head. Merino ewes sold from $34 to $154, with light weights gaining $5, and heavier weights selling for $168 to $190, also gaining $5 per head. One pen of heavy ewes sold for $254 per head. Crossbred mutton sold for $47 to $155, with lighter weights gaining $10, and heavy weights selling from $138 to $268 per head, gaining $5 to $12 per head. Most heavy-weight mutton averaged between 550 to 680 cents per kg cwt.
