Up to $25 a head increase for Lambs at Ballarat

Lamb supply decreased significantly today to 20,236 yarded, 16,000 less to a week ago. The quality was mixed, ranging from plain to very good, as lambs in full wool presented with dryness in the skins and not the weight to previous weeks. All the usual buying group attended, and all were active in the market to see price increases of up to $25/head in places. Light trade sold to $10 dearer, medium trade were to $17/head stronger, Heavy trade sold $8 to $12 better and export heavy lambs were in limited supply and sold to $25/head dearer. Store buyers were dominate today with lambs back to the paddock and to feed on selling $10 to $20/head stronger. Lambs under 18kg sold from $83 to $170 and $160 to $218/head over 18kg cwt.
Light lambs under 18kg cwt to suit MK orders to the trade sold from $150 to $169/head. New season trade lambs 18kg to 22kg sold from $161 to $196, lambs 22kg to 24kg made from $180 to $216, heavy lambs 24kg to 26kg sold from $205 to $225/head, with an average range of 820c to 850c/kg cwt. Export lambs over 26kg made from $222 to $238 and over 30kg sold to $257/head with an average range of 810c to 830c/kg cwt. Shorn lambs were in demand 18kg to 22kg sold from $174 to $185, lambs 22kg to 24kg made from $195 to $209, lambs 24kg to 26kg sold from $202 to $226 and over 26kg made $230 to $269/head to average 830c to 900c/kg cwt.
Sheep numbers decreased to 5,284 penned, the quality ranged from plain to very good. Most of the usual buying group were present, in a stronger market to a week ago. Overall, the market $5 to $10/head dearer across the yarding. Heavy Merino wethers made from $134 to $193/head, to average 640c to 680c/kg cwt. Merino ewes sold from $124 to $175/head to average 600c to 640c and heavy crossbred mutton made $162 to $247/head, to average 580c to 630c/kg cwt.
