Then along came the big Trucks - We love to talk about Ag business models in this newsletter. And I was thinking over the weekend about how the Fertiliser business model has changed over the years.
Back 20 or so years ago, there were a lot of up-country Fertiliser depots where Farmers would head in locally to collect their Fertiliser to use on the Farm. These same businesses were also contract Spreading.
Then things started to change, and Farmer's started to own Semi Trailers and bigger Trucks. That's when the Fertiliser model changed, and Farmers found it convenient and cost-effective to pick up their Fertiliser at the port depot. Usually, as a backload from a Grain delivery.
Other things happened to enhance this change of model. Farmers bought Fertiliser Silos and other Fertiliser infrastructure like Telehandlers and Shifters/Tubulators/Elevators. Farmers started buying Spreaders and doing it themselves. It was way more convenient to have your Fertiliser stored on Farm where you could grab it whenever you liked. All this has pretty much killed off the up-country Fertiliser depots.
