Strong price trends for Lambs at Wagga Wagga

Yarding - 39,500 (-5500)
Lambs - 32,000 (-4000)
Sheep - 7500 (-1500)

Numbers fell back moderately and quality was very good to mixed over trade weight classes. Extra heavy lambs, 26 to 30kg made up a large percentage of the offering. Lambs over 30kg carcase weight were in reasonable numbers. Big, heavy lambs, met strong demand due to the lack of numbers over 30kg cwt. Trade lambs sold to erratic bidding, with buyers wanting shorter skinned lambs and were prepared to up the ante. A full field of buyers were in attendance and local restockers were operating occasionally.

In the trade run, major domestic processors dominated the market for all the better shaped, shorter skin lambs. Lambs weighing 22 to 24kg gained $6, while neat trade lambs, 21 to 22kg, suiting niche domestic orders, jumped $14 to average 832c/kg. Merino trade lambs sold to a keen group of buyers and most categories sold to stronger price trends. Merino trade lambs averaged 748c/kg cwt. Young lambs to feed-on through the winter months sold at $142 to $184/head.

There was a smaller field of export buyers in attendance and not all were operating fully. Heavy and extra heavy lambs sold to fluctuating sales, with weight influencing prices. Heavy lambs, 24 to 26kg gained $3, averaging 808c/kg cwt. Lambs 26 to 30kg cwt made from $206 to $236 averaging 764c/kg cwt. Extra heavy lambs over 30kg cwt found support, with all buyers vying for a market share. Prices lifted $3/head to average 764c/kg cwt.

It was a mixed quality yarding of mutton, with heavy sheep in reasonable numbers. Not all buyers participated across the heavy categories. Heavy ewe prices eased $3 to $5/head. Heavy crossbred ewes made from $178 to $243/head to average 606c to 626c/kg cwt. Heavy wethers sold from $210 to $232/head averaging 644c/kg cwt. Merino ewes with plenty of weight sold at $169 to $203/head. Trade sheep sold to cheaper trends in a fluctuating market to average 670c/kg cwt.
