Lamb numbers surged significantly following last week’s higher prices. All domestic and export buyers attended the sale, along with restockers from Carcoar, Bendigo and Ballarat. Despite the large volume, the market demonstrated resilience, with strong demand for both old and new season lambs.
With 18,200 new season lambs offered, this was the largest number seen so far this year, providing a solid indicator of market trends. Southern buyers were particularly active, securing the majority of the young lambs. Young trade lambs weighing 20-24 kg sold for prices ranging from $166 to $219, averaging around 875c/kg. Heavy young lambs were in high demand, with 26-30kg lambs increasing by $15 compared to last week’s limited supply. Their prices ranged from $233 to $267, averaging 879c/kg. Young lambs returning to the paddock attracted competitive bidding, selling for $152 to $173/head.

Old trade lambs also saw strong interest from southern processors, with prices ranging from $160 to $208/head. Lambs weighing 24-26kg fetched between $210 and $232, averaging 866c/kg. Meanwhile, old heavy export lambs drew a large number of buyers, selling for $230 to $314/head. However, Merino lambs experienced a decline in both prices and quality, with trade lambs selling for $157 to $199/head.
It was a mixed yarding with light sheep in limited supply. Not all buyers attended the sale, or operated fully. Demand dropped away quickly with buyers not interested in bidding once they reached a price point. Heavy sheep dipped $30 to $57 in a fluctuating market. Heavy sheep sold from $76 to $133/head. Trade sheep sold from $53 to $100 slipping $11 to $26/head to average 366c/kg cwt.
