Strong Lamb sale at Ballarat

Yarding - 50,249 (-2357).
Lambs - 36,471 (-890).
Sheep - 13,778 (-1467)

Lamb supply decreased slightly to 36,500 head yarded. The quality was plain to very good with some lambs presenting with dryness in the skins and not the weight offered across the yarding. All the usual buying group attended but not all operated, very strong competition from store buyers to see light lambs back to the paddock and lambs to suit MK orders being from $8 to $15 stronger whilst trade and heavy lambs were firm to $5/head dearer. The demand was strong for the better quality lambs in all categories with prices reaching over 800c/kg cwt in places. Heavy lambs sold to a top of $240/head.

Feeders and restockers were very active on the light weight lambs back to the paddock, under 20kg selling from $114 to $165 whilst the 20kg and over lines made from $156 to $190/head. Lambs suiting MK orders under 18kg sold from $112 to $149/head. Lambs to the trade 18 to22kg sold from $147 to $173, 22 to 24kg made from $165 to $200 and 24 to 26kg sold from $188 to $210/head to reach 821c and to average from 750c to 760c/kg cwt. Export 4 score 26 to 30kg lambs, sold from $196 to $233 as the over 30kg lines reached a top of $240/head to average from 730c to 740c/kg cwt. Merino lambs under 20kg sold from $130 to $152/head. Hoggets sold to $175 for crossbreds and the Merino’s made to $174/head.

Sheep also decreased to 13,700 yarded, the quality was plain to excellent, with plenty of weight offered across the yarding. All the usual buyers were present but again not all active in a market that started softer to gain momentum as the sale progressed to end mostly unchanged from last week.

Heavy Merino wethers over 24kg sold from $159 to $255, with lighter weights selling from $125 to $165/head to average from 660c to685c/kg cwt. Heavy Merino ewes sold from $145 to $239/head. Heavy crossbred ewes made from $154 to $248/head, to average from 630c to 640c/kg cwt. Merino rams sold to a top of $160/head.
