Starting from nothing in Farming - Many young people start their Ag journey with nothing and end up doing well. Some don't, of course. We know that the smart ones find a way. This story is about one of those very people, but, as Farmers do, these guys chose to remain anonymous. And to add, they wrote it because they hope it inspires a young person to give it a crack. Here it is...
"Our story is a little different as my wife and I got married at 21 and went share Farming in the Dairy industry, milking 100 cows on 100 acres. We owned an old HD Ute and a Honda bike. After 27 years, we were milking 350 Cows on our own Farm. Of our three kids, our son is on the Farm with us, one daughter is in Ag Consulting, and one daughter now works as a Merchandise Manager".
"Murray Goulburn hit the wall in 2015, and we sold the Dairy and bought a Cropping Farm in Northern Victoria in 2017. Since then, we have been very lucky with the seasons, but it was a big risk coming over to Cropping. We had to make it work. I'm happy to say now we are really enjoying the Cropping, and our son loves it".
"My wife and I are first-generation Farmers and very proud of what we have achieved. We were told as young Farmers we wouldn't be able to achieve Farm ownership by many Banks. However, with the backing of the Commonwealth Development Bank, we got there. We now crop 2000 hectares and haven't inherited a dollar or an acre. It can be done, but it requires hard work over many years, discipline and making more good decisions than bad ones". Reply to dwaind@farmtender.com.au
