Some good price increases at Ballarat

Agents yarded 28,500 lambs, the quality was plain to very good with all weights and grades offered throughout the yarding. All the usual buying group attended, bidding started very strong causing price increases of up to $15/head in places, as the sale progressed the bidding ceased back to last week levels but overall there was a $5 to $12/head increase across all categories. Light and medium trade lambs sold $6 to $10 better, heavy trade $10/head dearer. Export lambs were up $5 and extra heavy lambs over 30kg cwt sold to a top of $301 an increase of $10/head. Feeders and restockers were very strong in the market after the rain over the past few days selling to $10/head dearer in places. Lightweight lambs back to the paddock, sold from $88 to $186/head. Lambs suiting MK orders under 18kg sold from $135 to $163/head up $7/head.

Lambs to the trade 18 to 22kg sold from $166 to $197, 22 to 24kg, made from $183 to $210/head to range from 795c to 895c to average830c to 860c/kg cwt. Lambs 24 to 26kg selling from $198 to $220/head, to average 810c to 825c/kg cwt. Export 4 score 26 to 30kg lambs, sold from $213 to $242 to average 805c and over 30kg sold from $244 to $301/head to average an estimated 772c/kg cwt. Hoggets sold to $224 for crossbreds and Merino’s sold to $179/head.

Sheep numbers decreased to 8,900 yarded, the quality was plain to very good with plenty of weight offered, all processors were present, bitting was intense throughout the market with high demand on all weights and grades, in places the market was up to $40/head stronger with the block of the market up $10 to $20/head dearer.

Heavy Merino wethers over 24kg sold from $240 to $270, with lighter weights making from $143 to $197/head to average 710c to 760c cwt. Heavy Merino ewes sold from $168 to $235 to average 660c to 690c and heavy crossbred ewes made from $161 to $286/head, with an average of 670c to 690c/kg cwt. Merino rams sold to $150/head.
