Small Sheep yarding saw gains of $15/head at Bendigo

Yarding - 16,400 (-600).
Lambs - 15,000 (0).
Sheep - 1,400 (-600).

Similar sized yarding of 15,000 lambs, but sheep numbers dropped away to just 1,400 head making it one of the smallest mutton sales Bendigo has seen for a very long time. All the usual buyers were active, with a major processor returning to purchase sheep. Agents reported a firm to dearer trend across the best trade and medium domestic lambs, while competition for heavy export pens remained subdued. A good supply of Merino lambs sold at dearer rates compared to a week ago.

Heavy export lambs sold to $260, with most sales of stock above 28kg cwt from $220 to $250/head. The main runs of heavy trade lambs sold from $180 to $220, and lighter crossbred lambs from $130 to $170/head. Well finished Merino lambs suiting trade orders sold to $197/head. Agents and buyers advised that weight is having a significant bearing on estimated carcass prices. The heaviest export lambs were quoted at 750c to 780c, the heavy trade weights made from 780c to 820c, while any nicely weighted domestic sold at premiums of up to 860c/kg cwt. Agents said good Merino lambs sold strongly at 780c to 800c/kg cwt.

A very limited offering of sheep. Heavy mutton was quoted as dearer with the return of a major processor, gaining up to $15/head on last week's cheaper results. Big crossbred ewes in wool sold to $264/head. The quote for mutton was 650c to 720c/kg cwt.
