Slight uptick in prices for trade and heavy Lambs at Ballarat

Lamb supply remained similar at 14,800 yarded. Excellent quality runs of medium and heavy trade and extra heavy export lambs coming off supplementary feed were penned. The quality slipped through the light trade weight and store lamb categories showing the signs of the cold winter conditions. Not all the usual buying group attended with one major exporter absent. The market was again strong on the trade and export lambs, the lighter lambs weren’t as sort after to be softer to a week ago. Light trade lambs dropped $10, medium and heavy trade sold firm to $2/head better. Heavy and extra heavy export lambs sold to a top of $281/head with not the weight yarded to a week ago.
Store buyers were quite this week where quality was limited, lambs back to the paddock and to feed on made from $28 to $166 selling to $12/head cheaper and more in places. Light lambs under 18kg cwt to suit MK orders to the trade sold from $88 to $156 slipping $10/head. Trade lambs 18 to 22kg made from $155 to $192, lambs 22 to 24kg sold from $187 to $213, lambs 24 to 26kg made from $210 to $229/head with a wide range of 800c to 890c/kg cwt to average 815c to 845c/kg cwt. Export lambs 26 to 30kg made from $224 to $253 gaining $4/head to average 830c/kg and over 30kg sold from $240 to $281 slipping $7/head with an average price of 765c/kg cwt.
Sheep numbers increased to 4,150 the quality was mixed ranging from plain to good. The market was softer to a week ago with a smaller field of buyers the competition wasn’t as strong to previous weeks. Heavy Merino wethers made from $174 to $201/head to average 670c to 690c/kg cwt. Heavy Merino ewes sold from $126 to $179 and heavy crossbred mutton made $154 to $244/head to average 610c to 650c/kg cwt.
