Sheep price stronger at Ballarat

Lamb supply increased this week to 24,766 penned, the quality ranged from plain to excellent, with over 50% of the yarding shorn lambs. Most of the usual buying group were present and all were active in a market that was firm to slightly easier in places to last week’s very strong prices, the very neat short skin lambs with good finish were in high demand, still reaching prices of 900c/kg cwt and above in places. Very light trade lambs sold firm to $6/head dearer, light trade were firm to $4 better, medium trade sold mostly firm and heavy trade lambs were to $5/head cheaper in places. Export heavy lambs were again in limited supply, with young lambs in wool sold to a cheaper trend and shorn lambs sold well to be firm to $4 stronger with a top of $286/head.
Extra store buyers were present and all active, with lambs back to the paddock and to feed on sold from $71 to $222 to be $10/head dearer. Light lambs under 18kg cwt to suit MK orders to the trade sold from $142 to $165/head. Trade lambs 18 to 22kg made from $168 to $207, lambs 22 to 24kg sold from $192 to $225, lambs 24kg to 26kg made from $209 to $240/head, with an average range of 830c to 880c/kg cwt. Export lambs over 26 to 30kg made from $226 to $262 and over 30kg sold from $260 to $286/head with an average range of 830c to 860c/kg cwt.
Sheep numbers also increased to 7,616 yarded, quality was mixed. Most of the usual buyers were present, and all active in the market. Overall, the market was $8 to $16/head stronger to a week ago. Heavy Merino wethers made from $159 to $187/head, to average 600c to 650c/kg cwt. Heavy Merino ewes sold from $143 to $186 to average 590c to 610c and heavy crossbred mutton made $140 to $220/head, to average 570c to 615c/kg cwt.
