Numbers increased and the demand for heavy lambs continued. Export processors have driven competition over several weight categories in the chase for numbers, with all companies operating. The limited availability of good trade lambs helped keep a floor in prices. Store lamb were well supplied and prices fluctuated according to breed and weight.
Quality across trade classes was average to good and buyers competed in a steady market however, at times bidding became patchy on plainer longer skin types. Trade lambs 21kg to 24kg sold from $166 to $191/head to average 790c/kg cwt. Store lambs with some weight and frame made from $112 to $174/head. In the heavy export market quality and weight were determining price outcomes, with notable price spikes along the way. The bulk of the heavy export lambs were firm to slightly dearer. 26kg to 30kg sold at $214 to $245head. Over the 30kg cwt topped at $299 to average 780c to 790c/kg cwt.
The sheep market begun the New Year on a weaker note and prices faltered again this week. Little competition and good supplies of quality mutton has definitely impacted on prices, with very few heavy crossbred ewes pushing above $100. Heavy ewes sold $35 to $45/head cheaper. The bulk selling from $65 to $105 with an isolated sale of $120head. Trade sheep sold between $12 and $62/head.
