Restockers again active at Ballarat

Lamb supply increased again with 31,000 head yarded. The quality was plain to very good, all the usual buying group attended with extra store buyers present. Buyers operated fully in a firm to slightly stronger market, bidding started softer to gain momentum as the sale progressed to be $10 dearer in places towards the end of the lamb run to average out at firm to $5/head better on last weeks levels. More weight was offered in the heavy export lambs which sold to a top of $254/head. Sheep supply also increased to 12,000 yarded, the quality was plain to excellent, exceptional runs of Merino mutton offered with plenty of weight, extra competition from export processes caused prices increases of up to $15/head at the start of the mutton run, halfway through the bidding intensity eased to see an average $4 to $8/head dearer on last week’s levels.

Feeders and Restockers were again active on the light weight lambs back to the paddock, under 20kg selling from $92 to $154 and 20kg and over made from $150 to $190/head. Lambs suiting MK orders under 18kg sold from $116 to $156/head. Lambs to the trade 18 to 22kg sold from $143 to $184, 22 to 24kg, made from $165 to $194 and 24 to 26kg selling from $185 to $202/head with a range of 709c to 827c, to average 750c to 760c/kg cwt. Export 4 score 26 to 30kg lambs, sold from $197 to $223 and over 30kg made from $226 to $254/head to average 720c to 730c/kg cwt. Merino lambs under 20kg sold from $98 to $140 whilst 20kg and over made from $156 to $189/head. Hoggets sold to $212 for crossbreds and Merino’s sold to a top of $180/head.

Heavy Merino wethers 24kg and over sold from $170 to $270 and lighter weights sold from $135 to $167/head, averaging 680c to 700c/kg cwt. Heavy Merino ewes sold from $164 to $266/head, averaging around 680c to 690/kg cwt. Heavy crossbred ewes made from $153 to $264/head to average from 630c to 660c/kg cwt. Merino rams sold to a top of $218/head.
