Price rises across all weights and grades at Ballarat

Lamb numbers remained similar with 27,598 yarded, there were exceptional runs of heavy export lambs over 30kg cwt penned. Quality ranged from plain to very good over most categories, with a plainer tail in the lighter weights. All the usual buyers were present in another strong market across all weights and grades. Bidding intensity increased over the really neat short skin lambs with good fat cover and finish, with these lambs reaching 760c to 800c/kg cwt. Light store and trade lambs sold to $5 to $12 dearer, medium and heavy trade were to $5 to $10/head better. Heavy export lambs sold to a top of $280 to be $8 to $15/head stronger to a week ago.

Lambs back to the paddock sold from 50 to $138 and lambs to feed on made from $140 to $155/head. Light trade lambs under 18kg sold from $77 to $134/head. Trade lambs 18 to 22kg sold from $118 to $170, lambs 22 to 26kg sold $150 to $202/head to have an average range of 680c to 720c/kg cwt. Heavy export lambs 26 to 30kg made from $183 to $227 and over 30kg sold from $220 to $280/head with an average range of 715c to 722c/kg cwt. Heavy Hoggets made from $100 to $182 for the crossbreds and $58 to $145/head for Merino’s, gaining $8 to $15/head in places. There was more buyer interest for the Merino Lambs selling from $48 to $108/head.

Mutton numbers slipped to 8,844 penned. Quality ranged from plain to very good. The market opened strong and gained more momentum as the sale progressed. Merino wethers sold from $78 to $119 for the light weights and $102 to $129 for the heavy weights with good skin length, gaining $10 to $20/head. Merino Ewes made from $15 to $88, for the lighter weights and $81 to $133/head for the heavy weights, selling to $25/head dearer in places with Merino mutton averaging 410c to 440c/kg. Heavy crossbred mutton made from $98 to $146, and the light weights made from $60 to $91, selling to $25/head stronger. Crossbred mutton averaged 360c to 400c/kg cwt.
