Price gains at Ballarat

Lamb numbers increased slightly this week, with a total of 7,770 penned. The quality of the lambs varied, ranging from well-presented lambs with short skins that were fed supplementary feed to plainer lots at the end of the draft and clean-up lots. All the usual buyers were present in a strong market across the yarding.

Light and medium-weight lambs saw a price increase of $5 to $10, with some even reaching $20 per head higher. Heavy trade lambs sold for an additional $7, while heavy export lambs peaked at $434 per head due to the increased weight offered this week.

A small number of new season lambs were penned and sold to trade buyers for prices ranging from $238 to $305, while restockers paid between $55 and $224 per head. Feeders and restockers also purchased lambs at prices ranging from $120 to $200 per head. Light trade lambs sold for $88 to $200, medium trade lambs fetched between $198 and $268, and heavy trade lambs sold for $250 to $352 per head, resulting in a wide average price range from 1025 cents to 1190 cents per kilogram (cwt). Heavy export lambs weighing between 26 to 30 kg made between $300 and $360, and those over 30 kg sold for $412 to $434 per head, averaging 1200 cents to 1240 cents per kilogram (cwt).

Sheep numbers also increased to 4,862 yarded, with a mix of quality. Merino wethers sold for prices ranging from $78 to $212, while Merino ewes made between $85 and $245, gaining $4 to $6 per head and more in places. Crossbred mutton sold from $90 to $281, with heavier weights seeing an increase of $8 to $10 per head.
