Pretty strong market at Ballarat

Lamb Numbers remained similar with 27,670 penned. Quality improved over the medium to heavy trade lambs, with not as much weight offered over the heavy export lambs. The quality varied through the light weights with a large portion plainer secondary types. Not all the usual buyers were present in a market that opened very strong over the light store and trade weights then eased slightly as the sale progressed. Store buyers were on the rail bidding with more intensity this week, light store and trade lambs sold to $5 to $10 dearer, with the plainer secondary types in places sold to $15/head stronger. Medium and heavy trade sold a few dollars either side of firm. Heavy export lambs sold to a top of $260 to be $5 to $10/head cheaper to a week ago.

Lambs back to the paddock sold from $28 to $139 and lambs to feed on made from $136 to $158/head. Light trade lambs under 18kg sold from $62 to $136/head. Trade lambs 18 to 22kg sold from $130 to $168, lambs 22 to 26kg sold $159 to $192/head to have an average range of 670c to 720c/kg cwt. Heavy export lambs 26 to 30kg made from $175 to $224 and over 30kg sold from $212 to $260/head with an average range of 690c to 715c/kg cwt. Good Hoggets made from $112 to $158 for the crossbreds and $88 to $120/head for Merino’s. Merino Lambs sold from $35 to $147/head.

Mutton numbers increased to 12,287. Quality improved with excellent runs of Merino wethers offered. The market opened strong and remined strong throughout the sale. Merino wethers sold from $59 to $134 for the light weights and $110 to $167 for the heavy weights, gaining $14 to $20/head. Merino Ewes made from $58 to $99 for the lighter weights and $80 to $145/head for the heavy weights, selling to $12/head stronger, Merino’s averaged from 420c to 480c/kg cwt . Heavy crossbred mutton made from $94 to $165, and the light weights made from $25 to $108/head.
