Pre Easter price jump for Lambs at Ballarat

Lamb supply eased to 23,200 penned, 14,000 less. The quality ranged from plain to excellent. All the usual buying group were present, the market started slightly easier to gain some momentum, towards the end bidding intensity increased due to markets cancelled later in the week for the Easter break, seeing prices jump $20/head in places. Overall the market ended firm to $10/head stronger in places. Light and medium trade lambs sold to $10 better, heavy trade sold to $8/head dearer. Heavy export lambs sold to a top of $274/head, to be firm to $4/head stronger.

Store buyers were again active, light store lambs were in good supply selling from $56 to $179/head. Light lambs under 18kg cwt to suit MK orders to the trade sold from $104 to $148/head. Trade lambs 18 to 22kg made from $145 to $187, lambs 22 to 24kg sold from $174 to $202, lambs 24 to 26kg $188 to $224/head, with a wide range of 720c to 922c to average 770c to 800c/kg cwt. Export lambs 26 to 30kg made from $209 to $236 and over 30kg sold from $233 to $279/head with an average range of 725c to 770c/kg cwt.

Sheep numbers decreased to 6,700 yarded, quality was mixed, not the weight offered this week. Not all buyers were active in the market, light mutton sold to a softer trend and heavy sheep held mostly firm. Heavy Merino wethers, made from $159 to $200/head, to average 600c to 620c/kg cwt. Heavy Merino ewes sold from $142 to $170/head, to average 560c to 600c, and heavy crossbred mutton made $142 to $227/head, to average 550c to 580c/kg cwt.
