Last week the inaugural Farm Tender conference was held in Bendigo. Being the first time we have ever done anything like this, I did wonder how it would all go. Dwain did the majority of the organising on his own and was the MC/main interviewer on the day and kept a lot of it close to his chest. I will be honest.... Prior to the lead up, I was quietly doubtful about how successful the day would be. I had questions. Should we have organised a professional to be MC? How many people will buy tickets? How is this going to be any different to every other Ag event? The last few that I have been to only spoke about themselves and what they do, and how good they do it. They weren’t very engaging.
But I’ll be the first to admit when I am wrong. The event was not about Farm Tender and what we do. The day was all about the Business of Farming. The aim was to provide helpful and meaningful content to Farmers, and that’s exactly what the event did.
A few things that I took away from the day were.
1. I sat with a number of Marcus Oldham students. I was impressed by how focused they were on what was being said and the number of notes they were taking. They wanted to be there; it wasn’t a part of their schooling. These students soaked up every piece of information that was provided.
2. Being lucky enough to be asked to speak about the current Fertiliser market, public speaking isn’t as easy as some of the other speakers made it look. It was out of my comfort zone. Talking on stage in front of 150 farmers is intimidating and so much easier behind the desk on the phone. But if you know the subject you are discussing and are being asked questions on, it makes it a whole lot easier.
3. It was great to catch up with customers face to face whom we have spoken to for a number of years over the phone. We should do it more often.
Oh, and one more thing, Dwain Duxson has a hidden talent for interviewing in front of a crowd. Who knew??
