Ordinary outing at Ballarat

Lamb numbers decreased to 7,550 penned. The yarding consisted of mostly secondary plainer lambs in rough skins lacking condition. Well finished lambs off supplementary feed were in limited supply in a typical late winter market. Not all the usual buying group attended and not all were on the rail in a mostly softer market to a week ago. Light store and trade sold to $8 to $12 softer, medium trade $4 to $11 cheaper and heavy trade held firm for the better quality and to $10/head softer for the plainer types. Heavy Export lambs 26 to 30kg were limited in supply, sold to a top of $280 to be firm to $4/head back on last week’s levels.

Store buyers paid $58 to $122/head. Light trade lambs under 18kg sold from $76 to $130/head. Trade lambs 18 to 22kg sold from $115 to $183, lambs 22 to 26kg sold $190 to $228/head, with a wide range from 620c to 840c/kg. Heavy export lambs 26 to 30kg made from $215 to $280/head. Merino lambs made from $14 to $155/head. Hoggets sold from $22 to $150 for the crossbreds and $45 to $125/head for the Merino’s.

Mutton numbers remained similar with 6,550 penned, Merino wethers sold from $7 to $121/head selling to $10 softer. Merino Ewes made from $7 to $45, slipping $10 for the lighter weights and the heavier weights made from $60 to $119/head. Heavy crossbred mutton made from $91 to $171, gaining $20/head in places and the light weights made from $25 to $95, selling $5 to $10 cheaper.
