Less lambs penned but a jump in sheep supply to 6,200 head for an unusual winter yarding where there was more mutton on offer than lamb. Quality in the lambs was very mixed with a lot of secondary types in the light and trade weight categories, while there was still some handy heavy fed lambs over 24kg cwt. Not all buyers were active and others were only willing to operate at cheaper price levels in a market that became very dull. Heavy and light lambs averaged $10 to $20/head cheaper, while the neatest trade types sized from 22-26kg cwt fared better to ease $3 to $8/head. Most sheep were also $10 to $20/head easier amid erratic bidding at times.

Heavy export lambs $215 to a top of $258 for a ballpark cost of 720c/kg cwt, but with some of the heaviest 35kg plus lambs down to 680c/kg cwt. Pens of heavy crossbred lambs 26-30kg cwt from $208 to $229/head and the neatest heavy trades $180 to $214/head. On a carcass basis the better presented lambs in these categories were trending from 750c to 780c with just isolated sales above 800c/kg cwt. Plainer tradeweighted lambs and odd penlots were treated harshly by buyers paying from $135 to $175/head at anything from 650c to 740c/kg cwt. Lightweight lambs under 20kg cwt were some of the hardest hit in the cheaper market with only limited restocking interest against processors for results of $96 to $135/head. Very small lambs, including some Merinos sold from $42 to $88/head.

The increase in sheep numbers was influenced by the return of a major export processor after winter maintenance, and some good heavy ewes and wethers were yarded. But again not all processors were active on mutton and prices were erratic and cheaper. Heavy crossbred ewes $168 to $194 for most with just one pen to $200/head. Heavy Merino wethers $152 to $180 and ewes $158 to a top of $210/head for a woolly pen. General run of light to medium sheep $100 to $135/head. Mutton was estimated as costing buyers from 550c to just over 600c/kg cwt for the better lines of Merino wethers.
