Mutton prices moves North at Ballarat

Lamb numbers have decreased to 5,990, and the quality was varied. There was a limited offering of new season lambs, which were in excellent condition, while the remaining old lambs showed a wide range in quality, from plain to very good. Not all regular buyers were present, and some were less active this week in a softer market compared to the previous week. Old lambs sold for $6 to $20 per head less, while heavy export lambs were limited and sold for up to $20 less.

New season lambs held firm, with prices increasing by up to $6 per head for restockers, and heavier weights sold for $15 per head more to the trade. A small number of new season lambs were pen and sold to the trade for prices ranging from $140 to $356, leading to an average price between 1,060 and just over 1,300 cents per kilogram (cwt). Restockers and feeders purchased lambs for amounts ranging from under $100 to $250 per head.

Old lambs were sold for prices between $122 and $283 per head to the trade, averaging from 960 to 1,140 cents per kilogram (cwt). Heavy export lambs weighing 26 to 30 kg sold for prices ranging from $300 to $340 per head.

Sheep numbers increased to 5,239, and the quality was mixed. Merino wethers sold for between $115 and $226, gaining $10 per head. Merino ewes sold for $80 to $230, increasing by $6 to $16 per head, with an average price between 650 and 820 cents per kilogram (cwt). Crossbred mutton sold for prices ranging from $95 to $258, with light weights increasing by $11, while heavier weights dropped by $6 to $10 per head.
