Mutton correction at Wagga Wagga

Yarding - 76,100

The landscape has been significantly impacted by ongoing dry conditions, prompting producers to make tough decisions regarding their lambs and sheep. As a result, the lamb market has witnessed another record. All weights and grades were offered to a slightly smaller group of export processors. Store orders were numerous and underpinned the lighter trade weighted lambs.

The market held its form for heavy export while trade lambs softened slightly. The trade market saw a big supply of lambs, with most buyers actively participating. Victorian processors, in particular, were in search for shorter-skinned lambs with good shape, helping drive competition in the market. Despite the strong demand, prices drifted, generally falling by $5 to $7/head. Lambs weighing between 22-24 kg, sales ranged from $158 to $215, while those in the 24-26 kg category saw steady competition, fetching prices between $212 and $244/head. Notably, Merino lamb prices have shown a lift, with trade types selling between $150 and $208/head. In terms of store lambs, those that have recently been shorn and are well-bred have seen prices increase by $10/head. However, lighter-weight lambs have not fared as well, with prices slipping by $10 to $18/head.

On the export front, not all processors were competing fully. Despite not all buyers being active, this did not impact the overall outcome. Prices remained firm to a few dollars dearer, with heavy lambs selling for between $232 and $268/head. Exceptional lambs over 30 kg cwt commanded particularly high prices, with the heaviest pens selling for an impressive $300 to $339/head to average 836c/kg cwt.

It was a mixed quality offering of mutton that sold to the usual buying group. There was a significant price correction of $20-$35 across most grades, with bidding subdued at times. Heavy mutton sold from 145 to $218, with big wethers selling to a top price of $197 to average 505c/kg cwt. Trade sheep sold from $108 to $149 to average between 458-499c/kg cwt. Light sheep fetched $67-$88
