Lamb numbers increased with 5,000 new season lambs and 3,600 old lambs yarded. The quality of the older lambs improved, with more weight and better shape being presented. However, the new season lambs experienced a slight decline in quality and a reduction in weight this week. Not all of the usual buyers were present, but those who were engaged in a lively market that exhibited some erratic behavior at times.
New season lambs sold to the trade at prices $5 to $10 higher than before, with those under 20 kg carcass weight (cwt) selling between $187 and $240. Lambs over 20 kg cwt sold for prices ranging from $232 to $319 per head, averaging between 1,100 to 1,250 cents per kilogram, with some sales exceeding 1,300 cents per kg cwt. Restockers purchased lambs from $116 to $167, while feeders paid between $174 and $258 per head.

Old lambs saw an increase of $5 to $14, selling to the trade at prices ranging from $128 to $280 per head, with an average range of 1,000 to 1,120 cents per kg cwt. Heavy export lambs weighing between 26 to 30 kg fetched prices from $270 to $339 per head.
Sheep numbers doubled compared to last week’s strong market, with 8,700 sheep yarded and an overall improvement in quality. Merino wethers sold between $147 and $238, gaining $8 per head in some cases. Merino ewes were sold for prices ranging from $130 to $228, showing a firm market with increases of up to $10 per head in certain areas, averaging between 790 to 880 cents per kg cwt. Crossbred mutton prices ranged from $78 to $282, generally holding firm for the lighter weights, while prices for the heavier weights were firm to $2 per head softer.
