Lambs tricky and Sheep make gains at Ballarat

Lamb supply remained similar with 37,000 penned. The quality ranged from plain to excellent, with plenty of weight offered across all categories. All the usual buying group attended, but not all were fully active. Bidding was strong on the lighter store lambs, but buyers were a lot more selective across the trade weights and heavy export lambs. Overall the market was trending softer to a week ago. Light trade lambs sold to $5 cheaper, medium trade were $4 to $8 softer, heavy trade sold to $10/head cheaper. Heavy export lambs sold to a top of $280/head, to be $11/head softer.

Store buyers were very active and competition was strong, with lambs back to the paddock and to feed on sold from $70 to $185/head to be firm to $5 cheaper. Light lambs under 18kg cwt to suit MK orders to the trade sold from $109 to $151/head. Trade lambs 18 to 22kg made from $157 to $184, lambs 22 to 24kg sold from $172 to $192, lambs 24 to 26kg $192 to $218/head, with an average range of 750c to 790c/kg cwt. Export lambs 26 to 30kg made from $206 to $233 and over 30kg sold from $232 to $280/head with an average range of 720c to 760c/kg cwt.

Sheep numbers slipped to 10,600 yarded, quality was mixed. Not all buyers were active in the market, but competition was strong. Heavy Merino wethers, made from $152 to $213/head, to average 620c to 630c/kg cwt, up to $15/head in places with better quality and more weight yarded this week. Heavy Merino ewes sold from $150 to $180/head, to average 590c to 600c, up $5/head and heavy crossbred mutton made $136 to $220/head, to average 560c to 600c/kg cwt.
