Lambs slightly off, Sheep stronger at Ballarat

Agents yarded a larger number of 25,288 lambs to lift by 4,788 head. Quality varied mostly from average to very good with a few more plainer lambs in the offering. The regular field of buyers were present and operated in a softer market overall. Lamb prices were from unchanged to $5/head easier for the light weights with restockers helping competition throughout the sale. The light and medium trade weights sold from $5 to $10 cheaper, heavy trade and the heavy weight lambs were from $10 to $15/head weaker on last week. In the sheep offering, there was 12,122 sold which was 674 more than last week. Quality consisted of all weights and grades with some excellent drafts of crossbred and Merino sheep with weight. Light sheep sold firm to $4 stronger, medium weights averaged close to unchanged, Merino wethers and the heavy sheep were $3 to $7/head dearer in places.
 
Light store lambs made from $111 to $147 and the restockers also paid from $156 to $195/head for better quality. The light lambs to the processors sold from $126 to $150 and the light trade weights made from $138 to $158/head averaging 770c/kg cwt. Medium trade weight lambs sold from $147 to $195, heavy trade weights made from $172 to $204/head to average from 740c to 750c/kg cwt. Heavy young lambs sold from $198 to $227 with the extra heavy export lambs selling from $224 to $243/head averaging 720c to 730c/kg cwt. Heavy old lambs made from $175 to $222, medium weights sold from $140 to $166 and the heavy hoggets sold to $240/head. Medium weight Merino lambs sold from $156 to $158/head.
 
Restockers purchased Merino ewes from $163 to $177 and Merino wethers at $184/head. Extra light sheep sold mostly from $89 to $134, medium weight mutton sold from $132 to $183/head averaging from 630c to 670c/kg cwt. Heavy crossbred ewes made from $163 to $200, extra heavy crossbred ewes sold from $204 to a market top of $277/head or to average 630c/kg cwt. Heavy Merino ewes sold from $170 to $228, heavy weight Merino wethers made from $220 to $249 and crossbred wethers sold to $262/head. Rams of all breeds made from $30 to $182/head.
