Lamb prices up and down at Ballarat

Yarding: 34,459
Lamb supply increased to 30,092, a large portion of the yarding was lighter store and trade lambs lacking finish. All the usual buying group attended in a mixed market, bidding lacked intensity on the store lambs and light trade lambs selling to $10 cheaper and to $20/head in places. Medium trade and store lambs sold most firm for the well covered finished lambs and to $10/head softer for the plainer types. Heavy trade lambs sold mostly firm with a few sales either side. Heavy export lambs were in demand selling very well to $17/head dearer.
Light store lambs sold from $65 to $150 and feeders paid $154 to $200. Young lambs sold to the trade under 18kg from $115 to $146, trade lambs 18 to 22kg made from $154 to $190, 22 to 24kg sold from $180 to $215 and 24kg to 26kg made from $200 to $250/head with a wide average range of 750c to 840c/kg cwt. Heavy export lambs 26kg and over sold from $230 to $287/head. Heavy lambs estimated to average range of 840c to 880c/kg cwt. Old extra heavy lambs presented in excellent condition making from $253 to $314 with one pen of four to $326/head.
Sheep numbers almost doubled to 13,367 the market started firm to a week ago then softened as the competition faded, heavy mutton remained mostly firm to last week’s levels while medium and light sheep slipped from $8 to $15/head. Heavy Merino wethers sold from $130 to $176, Merino ewes sold from $90 to $160 and heavy crossbred mutton made from $123 to $179/head.
