Lamb prices stronger at Bendigo as old season Lambs fade out of the system

Fewer lambs yarded, mainly due to a drop in old season stock as they start to fade out of the system. There was still 15,000 new season lambs penned, comprising of mostly crossbreds with only a few drafts of young Merinos at this market. The sale was dearer, led higher by stronger export competition with all the major companies back operating at reasonable levels again. Young lamb prices were $3 to $12/headbetter, with the best gains seen across the heavier categories. The same trend was evident in the old lamb run, with significant price gains for heavy pens at times.
Around 10 pens of export weight young lambs sold above $200, while a small pen of 27 head at 32kg cwt, sold to a top of $217/head. The category to show the most improvement was heavy young lambs in the weight band of 26 to 30kg cwt, which made from $180 to $215, to average $195, up $12/head. Price gains across the trade weight lambs were modest. The main run of 24 to 26kg cwt crossbreds sold from$170 to $189; and the 22 to 24kg pens made from $160 to $183/head. A price range from 670c to 740c covered the bulk of these lambs, with an average from 700 to 710c/kg across the main trade and heavy categories. More restocking competition emerged with agents from Ballarat, Horsham, Swan Hill and Bendigo, and this helped push light lambs along. Most of the better framed small young lambs from $130 to $155,with those to the paddock generally costing from $135 to $148/head.
Old season lambs were dearer across a mixed run. Heavy exports sold to $232/head.
Competition weakened and bidding was selective over 7,500 sheep. Once again there was a lot of weight and fat cover on offer. Not all the regular buyers were active, and prices eased by between $5 to $20 for mutton. Some of the plainer trade and light weight sheep were the most affected, making from $60 to $110/head. Big crossbred ewes made from $150 to $188, heavy Merino ewes $152 to $180 and wethers $167 to $200/head.
