Lamb prices softer at Wagga Wagga

Yarding - 41,000 (-5000).
Lambs - 30,000 (-6000).
Sheep - 11,000 (+1000).

Lamb supplies declined due to harvest and hay making. The quality of the new season lambs was very good over trade categories however heavy lambs were not as plentiful. A reasonable number of restocking orders were in play across light weight categories with most lightweight lambs absorbed by restockers and feedlot. A full field of buyers were in attendance however, not all exporters operated.

In the trade market major domestic processors dominated over the better presented well finished trade lambs 22 to 24kg but at cheaper price levels. Prices slipped $7/head. New season lambs sold from 22 to 24kg reached $194/head to average 773c/kg cwt. Trade lambs weighing from 21 to 22kg slipped $4 making from $164 to $179/head. Merino trade lambs sold to steady competition. The bulk of these lambs made from $150 to 182/head. There was a mixed selection of lambs to suit restockers. The general run sold from $126 to $176/head.

A full field of export buyers were at the rail however, not all companies operated fully. Competition across all weight categories was erratic with buyers occasionally in bidding duels for lambs weighing more than 30kg carcase weight. New season lambs 26 to 30kg sold from $200 to$235/head. Lambs weighing in excess of 30kg sold $9 cheaper making from $235 to $264/head.

It was a very good yarding of sheep and not all buyers operated. Heavy ewes sold to solid northern demand but several other companies did not compete. Heavy mutton to average from 577c to 628c/kg. Heavy Merino wethers sold from $200 to $209/head. Trade sold from $131 to $157/head
