Lamb prices rise at Ballarat

Yarding - 13,675

Lamb numbers increased to 7,820 again limited numbers in all weights and grade, quality varied with the majority of the yarding secondary types. A smaller field of buyers and not all operated fully in a stronger market. Lighter secondary lambs sold either side of firm. Trade lambs with good finish sold to $10 better and heavy well finished lambs sold from $20 to $30/head dearer in places.

Trade lambs 18 to 22kg made from $124 to $166, lambs 22 to 24kg sold from $166 to $183, lambs 24 to 26kg made from $172 to $199/head with a wide average range of 680c to 760c/kg cwt. Heavy export lambs 26 to 30kg made from $195 to $240 and over 30kg sold from $233 to $272/head with an average range of 720c to 780/kg cwt.

Another small yarding of mutton with 5,855 penned of mixed quality ranging from plain to good. Buyers were selective and bidding lacked intensity in a cheaper market that dropped $25/head in places. Merino wethers made from $132 to $190/head. Merino ewes sold from $76 to $165 and heavy crossbred mutton made $140 to $184/head with an averaging range of 500c to 600c/kg across the yarding.
