Lamb prices mixed and a stronger Sheep market at Ballarat

A plainer yarding of trade and light weight lambs, with heavy trade and export lambs presenting in excellent condition mostly coming off supplementary feed. Most of the usual buying group attended in a market that started very strong to soften as the sale progressed to then strengthen again. Light and medium trade lambs sold firm to $5/head dearer with sales over 900c/kg cwt at times for the short skinned well-presented lambs. Heavy trade was to $3/head better. Heavy export sold to $5 softer, extra heavy export lambs to $17 cheaper, selling to atop of $280/head. Store buyers were very strong again this week with lambs back to the paddock making from $115 to $178 for under 18kgand $167 to $205 for over 18kg cwt, selling firm to $5/head stronger. Lambs to suit MK (bagged) orders sold from $134 to $157/head.

Lambs 18 to 22kg cwt to the trade sold from $163 to $196, 22 to 24kg cwt made from $190 to $214/head to average 840c to 855c/kg cwt.Lambs 24 to 26kg cwt sold from $196 to $224/head, to average 820c/kg cwt. Export score 4, 26 to 30kg cwt lambs sold from $214 to $244,and the over 30kg cwt sold from $232 to $280/head. Heavy Merino lambs sold from $208 to $235 and lighter weights made from $113 to $200/head.

Sheep numbers remained at 8,900. The quality was plain to good, in a strong market to be $5/head dearer in places. Merino wethers made from $170 to $238 to range from 670c to 760c/kg cwt, with the lighter weights sold from $127 to $170/head. Heavy Merino ewes sold from$170 to $200 to average 670c to 680c and heavy crossbred ewes made $170 to $246/head averaging 660c/kg cwt. Merino rams sold to $155and $90/head for crossbreds.
