Lamb and Sheep prices "bounce" at Wagga Wagga

Yarding - 40,800 (-2200).
Lambs - 34,000 (-1000).
Sheep - 6800 (-1200).

Lamb numbers were marginally higher and new season lamb supplies stayed at 24,000. The quality of new season lambs was outstanding over trade and heavy export classes. Heavy and extra heavy old lamb numbers were down but there were still an excellent selection of lambs weighing in excess of 30kg carcase weight. Restocker activity was minimal due in part to most lambs weighing 21kg and over. A full field of buyers were at the rail and all were operating at capacity. The market was driven by exporters with many processors dropping back into heavy trade weights from 22 to 24kg to ensure they had adequate supplies.

New season trade lamb quality was exceptional, with the market gaining pace fueled by the Victorian kill restrictions being lifted and exporters. The bulk of the young lambs weighing from 21 to 24kg were purchased by domestic and export processors. The bulk of the medium and heavy trade lambs bounced $25 to average 850c/kg cwt. Old trade lambs were back in vogue with prices up to $20/head dearer. Merino trade lambs sold to a large group of buyers and all categories sold to stronger competition to average 700c to 733c/kg cwt. Young lambs returning to the paddock made from $152 to $202/head.

There was a full field of export buyers in attendance and demand was significantly stronger. Heavy and extra heavy old lambs jumped by $20to $34/head to average 787c/kg cwt. New season heavy lambs were keenly sought improving $30 to $36/head to average 793c/kg cwt. A single pen of young lambs weighing 33kg recorded a top price of $261, while heavy old lambs topped at $284.20/head. One pen of Merinosmade to a top of 246.2c/kg.

It was another good quality yarding of mutton with heavy sheep making up most of the offering. Heavy ewes sold to strong demand lifting by $26 to $56/head to average 670c/kg cwt. Heavy wethers were well supplied averaging from 668c to 669c/kg cwt. Trade sheep were limited averaging from 570c to 670c/kg cwt.
