Lack of usual buyers hurt both the Lamb and Sheep market at Ballarat

Lamb supply eased to 24,942 yarded, the quality ranged from good to excellent with plenty of weight offered across the yarding. Not all the usual buying group were present in a market that was erratic at times, with some processors purchasing limited numbers. Overall, the market lacked bidding intensity and ended softer to a week ago. All trade weights sold on average $5 to $10/head cheaper. Heavy export lambs sold top $286 to be $5/head softer and more in places.
Store buyers were very quiet or not present with lambs back to the paddock and to feed on sold from $44 to $188, to be $5 to $12/head softer. Light lambs under 18kg cwt to suit MK orders to the trade sold from $128 to $146/head. Trade lambs 18kg to 22kg made from $144 to $176, lambs 22kg to 24kg sold from $175 to $189, lambs 24kg to 26kg $180 to $204/head, with a range of 740c to 760c/kg cwt. Export lambs 26kg to 30kg made from $196 to $232 and over 30kg sold from $235 to $286/head with an average range of 715c to 740c/kg cwt.
Sheep numbers also eased to 9,182 yarded, quality was mixed ranging from plain to excellent. Not all the usual buyers were active in the market, with one major interstate exporter dominating the heavy mutton market, overall the market was $8 to $12/head cheaper. Heavy Merino wethers, made from $144 to $212/head, to average 585c to 610c/kg cwt. Heavy Merino ewes sold from $137 to $180/head, to average 550c to 570c and heavy crossbred mutton made $141 to $220/head, to average 560c/kg cwt.
