Incremental small steps to your ambition - Many young people have already made the decision that Agriculture is their industry of choice, and for some, owning a Farm or some Land is their ambition. So how do you go about it? Now let's, in this case, assume you don't inherit a Farm or some Land. Most people go about it by going Contracting, Shearing, buying a small number of Cattle or Sheep, Agisting, Leasing, share Cropping, share milk, using off-Farm income, etc.
All the things that will incrementally get you to your goal. You might think it's slow going, but you are also learning valuable lessons along the way. And guess what? According to one of the leading Ag succession planners/consultants, 88 percent of non-inheriting Farm owners do it this way. So it's a proven formula that works.
Shearing was, and still is, a great way to reach your goal of being a Farm owner. How many Shearers can you think of that went flat out for years and ended up owning a Farm of their own?
And for the young ones out there, you might think you are currently in a half-dead-end Ag job and getting nowhere. But don't despair because it all adds to the experience and journey to where you want to go. We wrote about it recently here. Young ones, we're barracking for you.
