Heavy Mutton $20-$40 better at Ballarat

Lamb numbers dropped slightly to 23,850 penned. Quality was mixed, lambs off feed presented in excellent condition while over half the yarding the lambs lacked weight and shape. All the usual buyers and some extra’s were on the rail in a stronger market across most weights and grades. Light store and trade lambs sold firm to $5 dearer, medium trade sold $5 to $10 better and heavy trade gained $10/head. Extra heavy export lambs sold to a top of $336 selling $10 to $15 better, however throughout the yarding there were sales to $25/head dearer in places, with sales reaching to 950c/kg cwt.

Lambs back to the paddock made from $38 to $161 and lambs to feed on sold from $160 to $207/head. Light trade lambs under 18kg to suit MK orders sold from $98 to 159/head. Trade lambs 18 to 22kg sold from $160 to $207/head, 22 to 26kg sold $193 to $225, to average 850c to 890c/kg cwt. Heavy export lambs 26 to 30kg made from $227 to $282 and over 30kg made from $271 to $336/head to average 890c to 910c/kg cwt. Merino lambs sold from $45 to $172/head.

Mutton numbers dropped to 11,698, quality was varied ranging from plain to very good. Not all buyers were active in a market that opened very strong with sales of $10 to $20 dearer for lighter mutton and heavy weights sold $20 to $40/head stronger, however bidding became erratic mid-way through the sale.

Merino wethers sold from $70 to $151 for the lighter weights while the heavier Merino wethers made from $144 to $185, gaining $15 to $30/head. Merino ewes sold from $15 to $155 for the light weights and the heavier weights made from $154 to $210, selling $10 to $30/head dearer. Crossbred mutton sold from $70 to $139 for the lighter weights and from $152 to $250/head for the heavy weights, selling to $40/head stronger. Most heavy weight mutton average from 550c to 650c/kg cwt.
