Hay Report - Buyers in the market for new season quality

For the fortnight up to the 16th of August 2022.

By Dwain Duxson

As the sales guys report below, the Hay job was quieter in the last fortnight. That's on the back of a pretty good run over the last couple of months.

All focus now is on the new season and what that will bring.

The third consecutive La Nina could pose a problem with Cutting 6 to 8 weeks away in some areas. This is on top of already wet ground, mainly in NSW and Queensland, and I see WA is getting their fair share of rain lately. Conditions are looking pretty good in the main Hay Growing areas in SA, Vic and NSW Riverina. Let's hope we can get a good clear run from Cutting to Baling this year.

Management skills for getting Hay through unscathed will come to the fore once again. Those good Hay Producers find a way.

The new Hay season will all be about quality, or that's what's on the wish list for Producers and buyers alike.

With it looking like a good Spring, we think demand will be pretty low. However, if there is quality around, we think buyers won't dilly dally around and will likely push their buying options forward.

If you haven't yet thought about your Hay Merchandise requirements, I suggest you start looking very soon. Like everything, Hay Merch might be tight.

What's happened to Hay prices over the last fortnight?

The best quality Vetch Hay supplies have dried up during the last fortnight, with most lines selling between $220-$260 a tonne. A couple of lines made $280 a tonne.

Cereal Hay, with Oaten Hay, in particular, maxed out at $200 a tonne in the last fortnight, with many discounting slightly to clear some Shed space.

We made some good Straw sales in the last fortnight with some good quality Shedded stuff going into the Queensland Feedlot market for $92.50 a tonne.

All prices quoted are ex GST and ex Farm.

We go around the grounds to see what our Farm Tender Salespeople have to say:

Paul Grayling - Mallee, Vic based

Paul said - This last fortnight has seen the enquiry for Hay and Fodder drop off a touch. We have sold a few parcels of Protein Hay along with some roughage type Hay and some Straw, but nothing has shifted in big licks.

Looking forward, we won't be too far off seeing new seasons Hay on the ground, and hopefully, conditions are favourable for rain-free curing times.

Shane Ruyg - Qld based

Shane said - A quieter fortnight with Hay as hearing the Dairies have been buying less and pastures are being used with the favourable weather.

We still have some buyers chasing good Cereal Hay and starting to get calls on the new season Vetch Hay with some growers saying they haven't seen it better at this stage. Let's hope they can get it in a Bale before the rain hits like the previous years.

Mike Pickard - Travelling around

Mike said - As reported last fortnight, there is interest in Straw moving forward in the Northern parts of New South Wales and Queensland to supply Feedlots. They are looking for eight stringers with plenty of weight for transport. Good Straw sales around ($90-100 /mt) with some interest in more for the Northern Feedlot market.

Better quality Hay is still popular. It's just a matter of finding it.
