Hard fed Lambs dominated at Wagga Wagga

Yarding - 76,500

The ongoing dry autumn conditions have pushed nearly 20,000 extra lambs into the market this week, as farmers continue to offload stock. Despite the increased numbers, lamb quality remained very good, with hard-fed lambs dominating the yarding and most grain fed lambs weighed over 24kg cwt. A significant number of Victorian processors travelled north to attend the sale, as lamb numbers tighten further south. Their presence, alongside local buyers, contributed to a very solid market.

Heavy lambs over 30kg cwt consistently sold above $300/head throughout the sale, reflecting strong demand. Despite dry conditions and increasing supply, strong processor and feedlot demand has kept the lamb market buoyant, especially for well bred and well finished types Trade lambs were keenly sought after by southern processors, with some supermarket competition adding further support. Lambs in the 22-26kg cwt range sold from $170-$240, with most averaging around 850c-866c/kg cwt. Merino trade lambs saw fluctuating prices, making $154-$210, while the heavier portion reached up to $250/head. Store lambs attracted significant interest from a large group of buyers. Lambs with weight and frame sold between $146-$183/head, highlighting continued demand for future finishing.

It was a very mixed quality offering of mutton with all weights and grades represented. The market was very strong and had some urgency for younger ewes and wethers. Heavy ewes sold to stronger northern demand making from $170 to $250 . Trade sheep varied greatly in fat cover. The bulk of the better presented selling from $124 to $156 to average 605c/kg cwt.
