Good price gains for Sheep, Lambs erratic at Ballarat

Sheep - 10,055 (+917)
Lamb supply decreased slightly to 24,831 units. Lambs were mostly presented in excellent condition with a large percentage coming off supplementary feed. Most of the usual buying group attended in a very erratic market. Lambs presented in short skins with good finish sold dearer and the plainer types sold firm to a cheaper trend. Light trade lambs were mostly firm, medium trade were firm to $4 cheaper and heavy trade selling firm to slightly softer to a week ago. Export lambs were in demand with more competition on the rail. 26kg to 30kg lambs were up to $8 better and over 30kg cwt sold to a top of $300/head to be $5/head dearer with estimated cwt of over 40kg.
Competition was stronger for the store lambs this week with lambs back to the paddock and to feed on were to $12/head dearer selling from $46 to $186/head. Light lambs under 18kg cwt to suit MK orders to the trade sold from $120 to $147/head. Trade lambs 18 to 22kg made from $157 to $188, lambs 22 to 24kg sold from $180 to $204, lambs 24kg to 26kg $198 to $215/head with a wide range of 750c to 820c/kg cwt. Export lambs over 26 to 30kg made from $210 to $241 and over 30kg sold from $229 to $300/head with an average range of 750c to 780c/kg cwt.
Sheep numbers increased to 10,055 penned where the quality was mixed ranging from plain to excellent. A lot more buyers were present and active in the market and this reflected in prices with more competition the market realising a $15 to $30/head increase from last week’s price drop. Heavy Merino wethers made from $150 to $215/head to average 620c to 650c/kg cwt. Heavy Merino ewes sold from $165 to $193/head to average 590c to 620c and heavy crossbred mutton made $150 to $235/head to average 570c to 600c/kg cwt.
