Good competition saw Sheep prices rise at Ballarat

Lamb supply remained similar at 32,100 penned. The quality was ranging from plain to excellent. Most of the usual buying group attended, with one export buyer absent and not all were fully active. Bidding was erratic at times with some sales $10/head side of last week’s levels, except for the extra heavy export over 30kg cwt sold to a cheaper trend. Light trade lambs sold firm to a few dollars better, medium and heavy trade sold mostly firm. Heavy export lambs 26 to 30kg sold firm to $2 softer, while over 30kg selling to a top of $298 to be $16/head cheaper and more in places.

Store buyers were again very active this week, with lambs back to the paddock and to feed on sold from $66 to $180/head to be $3 to $5/head dearer. Light lambs under 18kg cwt to suit MK orders to the trade sold from $97 to $151, $5/head stronger. Trade lambs 18 to 22kg made from $150 to $185, lambs 22 to 24kg sold from $175 to $200, lambs 24 to 26kg made from $190 to $208/head, with an average of 750c to 790c/kg cwt. Export lambs 26 to 30kg made from $199 to $234 to average 760c to 770c and over 30kg sold from $238 to $298/head with an average range of 715c/kg cwt.

Sheep numbers decreased slightly to 9,870 yarded quality was mixed ranging from plain to very good. Competition was strong again this week. Overall the market was to $8/head across the yarding. Heavy Merino wethers made from $157 to $190 gaining $5 to $8/head to average 640c to 670c/kg cwt. Heavy Merino ewes sold from $151 to $174/head, to average 610c to 640c, and heavy crossbred mutton made $149 to $224/head, to average 580c to 610c/kg cwt.
