Gains for Mutton at Wagga Wagga

Yarding - 48,000

Numbers lifted moderately. There were mixed signals from the market throughout the sale, with supermarkets and key exporters not as active. Prices varied notably with most buyers chiming in for best presented drafts. There was a good line up trade lambs however, torrential rain throughout the night impacted on their overall appearance. Trade and heavy lambs prices softened with the market generally hoovering around 800c/g cwt.

Trade competition was weaker despite the lift in quality. Trade lambs 21kg to 24kg sold $5 cheaper to average 796c/kg. Lambs 25kg to 26kg felt the brunt of a cheaper trend with very few buyers interested in this category the bulk averaged 804c/kg cwt. Store lambs with some weight and frame made from $112 to $171/head. In the heavy export market weight was determining price outcomes, with stronger bidding only occurring over 30kg cwt. The bulk of the heavy export lambs were $8 to $16 cheaper. Lambs 26kg to 30kg sold at $201 to $248/head. Over the 30kg cwt topped at $290 to average 787c/kg cwt.

The sheep market rallied with a northern processors leading the charge. Stronger competition and good supplies of quality mutton offered gave buyers plenty of options. Heavy ewes on average gained $10, while heavy Merino wethers attracted a large field of buyers topping at $144/head. Trade sheep were gained $6 to $10/head, selling from $56 to $86/head.
