From frustration and motivation - As Farmers, we are mostly an optimistic bunch. We have to be, knowing that we have to deal with many things that are out of our control. More than other industries, I would suggest.

Being optimistic means we are always looking forward ambitiously, always striving to get better and working out ways to improve. But striving all the time can get exhausting.

I was reading a blog by Janette Barnard, who said that we need to always measure backwards. She said this "When we measure the gap between where we are today and where we want to be yet, it's easy to get frustrated. But when we measure backward and see progress, it's hard not to be motivated".

Making your way in Farming is all about making incremental changes and small gains over years and decades. I have this saying that Agriculture has this knack for not letting any of its participants grow too quickly. It's a long, drawn-out process of commitment and persistence. But when it comes to measuring backwards, we can actually get some contentment, which is mighty hard to come by in the Ag game because we are a hard-wired bunch.
