Farming responsibilities - As youngsters, we just wanted to bore in at it, have a go, make a few mistakes and hopefully make some progress. Now it's middle age, and we turn more into control freaks worrying if there is anyone out there that can do it the same way we do it. Then we get a little older again and want less responsibility, and we start cooling our jets.

It's interesting the cycle, and it's typical of how we work in Agriculture. But that's changed a little.

I am noticing more young people are taking the reigns earlier. I honestly think it's a good thing because young guys, with some wiser heads helping them, tend to run better businesses. And I say that with all due respect.

One way to get the younger ones going is to start defining roles and make sure you give them responsibilities. Or better still, let them decide what things they want to do. If you're lucky enough to have young ones around you, make sure you keep them interested, or they'll move on.
