Ensure the knowledge stays - I listened to the "Boots On Log Off" podcast featuring Andrew Fowler, a successful WA Farmer in the Esperance area, yesterday morning. You can listen to the podcast here.

It is a ripping interview with lots of Farming takeaways and one that struck a chord with me was how he said you have to keep the knowledge in your Farm business. So when he said that he wasn't talking about himself as the CEO, he was talking more about the people he employs and all the 3rd party service providers whose expertise the business relies on.

So basically, we are talking about the people, and the people that have been around for years, who know the place backwards, know how things function and can probably work unimpeded. This is of more value to us than we think.

We wrote in The Farmers Club newsletter yesterday about how there is a lack of Agronimists. Someone replied that his mature-aged Agronomist is so important to his business that if he lost him, he would be in the shit street. So, what he is doing is getting a young Agro on board to work in collaboration with the older guy. So when it comes time for the older guy to give it away, the young one has a bank of knowledge built up. Think about the people you have around you on your Farm and how it might be if one of those people left in a hurry. Where would you be? It's an old adage that everyone is replaceable, but on the Farm, are they? Reply to dwaind@farmtender.com.au
