Dry forcing Mutton onto the market at Ballarat

Yarding: 42,202
Lamb numbers remained similar with 26,722 penned, lambs off supplementary feed presented in excellent condition over the extra heavy exports and the lead of the trade lambs. Quality became patchy ranging from plainer types lacking condition to lambs with weight in dry skins. All the usual buyers were on the rail competing in another strong market. Light store lambs sold to $10 dearer and light trade sold $3 to $8/head stronger. Medium trade sold firm, however in places plainer lambs sold to $5 softer and heavy trade gained $2 to $4/head. Heavy export topped at $335/head selling to $7 dearer.
Lambs back to the paddock made from $18 to $159 and lambs to feed on sold from $141 to $201/head. Light trade lambs under 18kg to suit MK orders sold from $127 to 162/head. Trade lambs 18 to 22kg sold from $146 to $198/head, 22 to 26kg sold $176 to $235, to average 810c to 860c, there were cheaper sales throughout the yarding with a wide range of 770c to 920c/cwt. Heavy export lambs 26 to 30kg made from $223 to $268 and over 30kg made from $264 to $335/head.

Mutton numbers jumped to 15,480 yarded off the back of last week’s surge in prices and the ongoing very dry conditions in the region. All the usual buyers were active in a softer market, however still strong competition across the yarding.
Merino wethers sold from $68 to $148 for the lighter weights and the heavier wethers made from $148 to $224/head. Merino ewes sold from $20 to $130 for the light weights and the heavier weights made from $88 to $159/head. Crossbred mutton sold from $48 to $154 for the lighter weights and from $142 to $238/head for the heavy weights. Most heavy weight mutton average from 530c to 630c/kg cwt.
