Done correctly, it could be an opportunity -- At The Business of Farming event the other week, speaker Professor Richard Eckard said Farmers would be mad to sell any carbon credits that they may accumulate in the future because they might need them one day to accompany the things they sell themselves.
The way I read it, if every Farmer held onto any carbon credits they might earn in the future, then that means Agriculture DOES NOT become a major solution for carbon offsetting like they say it's going to be.
If Farmers don't or won't sell credits or offsets to, say Qantas (example company) and the like (who need to buy offsets to reduce their carbon usage), then these guys will have to look elsewhere. Unless, of course, they buy Land themselves and do it that way. (I'm still a bit in the dark as to how to produce a carbon credit or offset).
So the opportunity for Farmers, who hold the credits, might be to partner with the organisations that value-add the commodities they produce and clip the ticket on the down-the-line products where most of the profits are made. Or they might say to Qantas, I won't sell you the credits, but you can use them to offset, and as payment, I will need a percentage of each airfare you sell. Done correctly, it could be a massive opportunity.
