Does No-till still fit the bill? -- The no-till Cropping system has been revolutionary for Australian Croppers. We have become experts in retaining moisture, which has reshaped the landscape from a Cropping perspective.
The no-till system has been pretty rigid, though. Follow the rules and don't go off track, eg, no Livestock, don't burn. Some still follow those rules, but others are doing things outside the system because they know they have to to get the best result.
What sparked this topic was a Farmer who said yesterday, "after 2 Summer Sprays, my next kill will be administered by Cultivation". I didn't get the reason why they are doing it, but we are seeing it as a trend. On Farm Tender, we are selling heaps of Offset Discs, Speed Tillers, Disc & Prickle Chains, Scarifiers and Cultivators.
I remember when I was on the Farm, and we were in the then revolutionary but controversial SRS (Soft Rolling Skin) Sheep system. We and others under the banner conformed to the system's rules for years. Eventually, it became less popular because it was rigid, and Sheep Farmers could see some opportunities outside the system and took them.
