Yarding - 16,000 (+1190).
Lambs - 13,000 (+1484).
Sheep - 3,000 (-294).
Lamb supply remained similar, while sheep numbers continue to tighten off an already low base. The market for quality processor lambs was exceptional this week, with agents, farmers and even buyers themselves describing prices as "unbelievable'' and the dearest they had ever seen. On a dollar per head basis the bulk of the lambs sold above $200/head, with carcase estimates for the main runs of medium and heavy trade weight lambs pushing into new levels of 900c to 1,000c/kg cwt. Not all buyers operated fully, but intense competition from a small number of processors that appeared short of numbers created the much dearer trend. Prices for plain and light weight lambs were also carried higher by the push to fill orders.

There was less weight in the lamb yarding overall, and the few pens of extra heavy export lambs sold from $278 to $299/head. The hot spot of the sale was good crossbred lambs weighing 24-27kg cwt, with bidding led by the major domestic processors. The main run of heavy crossbred lambs in the 26-30kg cwt category sold from $256 to $293 to average close to $275/head, at an estimated 960c/kg cwt. The lead runs of 24-26kg cwt lambs made from $221 to $275 to average $262/head at 1,000c/kg cwt. Plain and lighter weight lambs also benefited from demand being greater than available supplies. Small crossbred lambs in the 16-18kg cwt category sold from $140 to $156/head. The best of the Merino lambs reached $220/head and prices for this breed of stock also lifted.

It was a plain and limited mutton yarding, with many small pen lots of less than 30 head now coming through. Competition was firm to dearer for any heavy sheep with good fat cover, and better lines of lean trade weights. Heavy full fleeced Merino wethers sold to $280 and big crossbred ewes reached $258/head. The better quality mutton was estimated to cost processors from 600c to 700c/kg cwt.
